In these organisations, we have hundreds (even thousands) of development teams and it is impractical and inefficient to expect each team to develop its own infrastructure and platform layers as well as their application. Instead, we have centralised teams for infra and platform, and they distribute their output to the development teams and we typically work with the cluster-per-app model.ĭistributing this effort to each team would be a governance and compliance nightmare and hiring that many people with the right skills would be impossible. ![]() We have 2 main models to provide access to the output of the centralised infra and platform teams: In modern orgs we work with a cross-functional team that has some skills in each of the areas we need, including DevOps, and each team member is also a member of a group that is focused on their speciality where they receive groupwide instruction. The infra and platform teams can provision clusters on behalf of a dev team and provide the pipelines needed to deploy applications to it. This works well when a team has little or no DevOps capability, but it is far from being the best solution as it creates a dependency from the dev team to the infra and platform teams which usually causes impedance and added complexity. The infra and platform teams can provide access to their git repos, and the dev teams can fork them into git submodules within their own mono-repos. This model is by far the most common and currently represents the best solution for highly regulated industries. One of the biggest benefits here is that a dev team can make the changes they need to make (to the infra and platform) and issue pull-requests for the application teams to manage, without having to coordinate the schedules of the teams and thus reducing impedance.īoth solutions have their problems and complexities, but both are manageable given good engineering leadership and tool support. Solution 1 would require separate repos for infra, platform, and app, and this usually results in a need to synchronise the backlogs of the respective teams, which quickly becomes a logistical nightmare as the number of teams increases. ![]() Solution 2 would require the implementation of 'initial trust' base infra with something like Open Policy Agent (OPA) rules to ensure that dev teams are complying with organisational governance requirements (e.g. verifying that a dev team isn't running a bitcoin mining operation, or publishing pro-trump/fascist/racist propaganda to our public-facing websites). OPA is an amazing tool when decentralising responsibility for the lower layers of an app while maintaining central control and I can't recommend it highly enough. The app per cluster model allows you to use a monorepo that can completely rebuild your app from the ground up with minimal human interaction. The alternative architecture, multi-tenanted, completely disallows the monorepo approach and you must have separate repos for each of the layers. ![]() ![]() 0083 to seize the Gundam GP02A with the intent to use this mobile suit's nuclear weapon against the Federation's Naval Review. We should stress the point that nothing is perfect. Hopefully, this example helped to show how accuracy and repeatability are commonly confused in motion control applications. At this point, it may be better to add another measuring device, like a linear encoder, that has a guaranteed accuracy. We could map the positional error throughout the entire travel range and make a calibration table, but that would be time-consuming and there is a lot of opportunity for mistakes. He wants to be able to enter any length in millimeters on an HMI screen and have the system cut that length. So happy in fact that now he wants to use this system to cut all of his wire. The solution worked! It turns out that even though the application called for positional accuracy, it could be accomplished with repeatability and a little calibration. This saved Bert a lot of money because a system that has an accuracy of 0.1mm at 900mm would be much more expensive. So instead of 90 turns of the screw, we will program the motor to rotate 89.97 times. Maybe if we shoot for 899.7mm, we will actually hit 900mm. What if we calibrate the system? The +0.3mm error can be accounted for by reprogramming the move. So, what do we do now? Do we trash this system and start from scratch? Not so fast. Positional accuracy is dependent on the stroke length and as the actuator travels 900mm, it is not uncommon for it to be off a few tenths of a millimeter. The reason? Nothing is perfect, not even a precision ground ball screw. Even though the system has a resolution of 0.005mm and a repeatability of 0.02mm, the actuator was still off by 0.3mm after traveling 900mm. Repeatability was mistaken for accuracy, that’s how. This is a very common problem, and these are real world numbers. But it seems like all the measurements are off by about +0.3mm. The measurements were all very close, within 0.01mm of each other, so the repeatability is very good and within catalog specification. Three parts were measured and the values were 900.305mm, 900.295mm, and 900.300mm. Resolution: The smallest difference that can be measured.Īfter running the machine for a while it is discovered that the parts are too long.Repeatability: How close a group of measurements are to each other.Accuracy: How close a measurement is to the actual value. ![]() ![]() Here are some very simple definitions for each term: Accuracy, repeatability, and resolution are all used to describe the “correctness” of your results. So, a question that comes up when specifying a product or solution is, “How imperfect will my results be?” Fear not, there’s a measurement for that. The point is that everything can be measured. The next thing to keep in mind is that nothing is perfect. Measurements can be done on anything, like mass, distance, or even more complicated things like flow rate or humidity. Let’s take a few minutes to talk about these specifications and how they apply in the field of automation and motion control.įirst, let’s talk about measurement. This can cause products to be incorrectly specified and, in many cases, over-designed for an application. They are often misunderstood, used interchangeably, or just plain confused. The terms accuracy, repeatability, and resolution can be found on the spec sheets of many engineered products. Background music can be added to the video to give an ambient feel to it.

The exact cause of skin tags is still being researched. The exact cause is unknown, but skin tag causes are usually attributed to age and the overproduction of squamous skin cells. However, it is a benign, non-cancerous raised skin tumor. The skin tag is a tumor because it is a growth. The majority are a few millimeters to a centimeter in diameter. Some are wrinkled, while others are smooth some may be as small as a pinhead, while others can grow to the size of a grape. Skin tags in the vaginal area can appear anywhere in the vulva, perineum, or around the anus. While some are flesh-colored, others are darker than the surrounding flesh some are flat, while others hang off the skin by a stalk known as the peduncle. They are usually small flesh-colored growths that protrude from the skin. If there is one skin tag, then there are often many others. They can form along the neckline, under the arms, beneath the breasts, on and above the eyelids, and even in the groin area. Developing skin tags is one of those annoyances that occur as we age. It is extremely rare for a skin tag to be cancerous, even genital and vaginal skin tags. These benign (non-cancerous) skin growths are more often an embarrassment than an actual medical problem, and most women will want to have these vaginal skin tags treated if possible. ![]() This term is apt for work that extends and challenges existing linguistics with data from the speech community. When sociolinguistics serves as a legitimizing label for such activity, it is, as said, not conceived as a challenge to normal linguistics linguists who perceive such a challenge in the label tend to eschew it. For the most part this work is conceived as application, lacking theoretical content, or else as pursuing theoretical concerns that are in addition to those of normal linguistics, or perhaps even wholly unrelated to them. The salient examples today involve American cities and developing nations and concern problems of education, minority groups, and language policies. American linguistics does have a tradition of practical concerns-one can mention Sapir’s semantic research for an international auxiliary language, Bloomfield’s work in the teaching of reading, Swadesh’s literacy work, the “Army method” of teaching foreign languages. Here may be placed ventures into social problems involving language and the use of language, which are not seen as involving a challenge to existing linguistics. Let me characterize each of these in relation to linguistic theory. Nevertheless, three main orientations can be distinguished, orientations that can be labeled: the social as well as the linguistic socially realistic linguistics socially constituted linguistics. Indeed, not everyone whose work is called sociolinguistic is ready to accept the label, and those who use the term include and emphasize different things. The term sociolinguistics means many things to many people, and of course no one has a patent on its definition. Orientations and concerns in sociolinguistics As to (3), if we take “integrated” to encompass the structure of sentences within the structure of discourse, of referential meaning within the meanings of speech acts, and of dialects and languages within the organization of verbal repertoires and speech communities, then we can see a convergence implicit in much of the best recent work and envisage a unity it can attain. At the same time, facts of practical experience (e. g., the organization of linguistic features in terms of verbal repertoires the role of social meaning as a determinant of acceptability and the “creative aspect of language use” the effects of personal identity, role, and setting as constraints on competence) point to severe limitations of present linguistic theory and stimulate efforts to overcome them. As to (2), note that findings about the organization of variation and the structure of speech acts-both are central to linguistic theory-contribute to the scientific basis that successful practice needs. As to (1), witness the current disarray with regard to arguments in syntax and semantics and to the place of semantics, intonation, and even phonology and lexicon in a model of grammar itself, as issues of empirical adequacy and validity are pressed against the dominant “intuitionist” approach-and as other, contextually oriented traditions of work are gradually reinvented or grudgingly rediscovered. But in the present state of sociolinguistics, I would maintain (1) that the scientific as well as the practical side of linguistics stands in need (2) that scientific and practical needs converge and (3) that steps taken during the past decade have brought us to the threshold of an integrated approach to linguistic description. Some of what is done under the rubric of sociolinguistics may be justified only in the sense that something is better than nothing, when need is great. ![]() If relevance to social problems were not recognized, sociolinguistic research would still be needed for the sake of an adequate theory of language. ![]() However, there are scientific as well as practical needs. ![]() The energetic activity in sociolinguistics is nourished in important part by the obvious relevance of much of its subject matter, joining other academic fields in which concern for education, children, ethnic relations, and governmental policies find expression. We are all familiar with the gap that can exist between public concerns and the competence of scientists. In one fundamental regard, I think, simply to a threshold. Where do we stand? How far have we progressed? In some ways, very far. The present meeting is in a way a culmination of the decade’s activity. There have been general symposia symposia on major topics notable major research efforts the launching of series of working papers books of readings, increasingly specific to the field textbooks even a series of collected papers of middle-aged men who find themselves senior scholars and journals. The subsequent decade has seen a great deal of activity. The term “sociolinguistics” began to gain currency about ten years ago. |
